So it turns out that Hamster: Attack! isn’t so far from reality after all! A study in the December 9 issue of Sciencereports that rats exhibit empathy when they encounter another rat trapped in a cage.
The best part? Once they figure out how, they always go and rescue their fellow rat!
Again and again humans have claimed this or that feature separated us from animals. Either we were the only ones who could use tools, the only ones that would play as adults, or even that humans are the only species that is driven more by culture by learned behavior.

Finishing up the Lab Rats episode is a tricky level where you have to do several things to free a couple of hamster friends. Hint 1:
First thing to do is to knock down the tall bars so that they cover up the area with the green balls. You wouldn’t want something to fall down there before you scare the cat. It’s hard to wake up the cat with those blocks in the way, though…

Hamster: Attack! Level 2:17

Sometimes people ask about how to beat level 2:17 (level 17 in the pet shop episode). For most people, the trick is the timing – those domino-like slabs just keep falling! – but there’s an easier way.
Hint 1:
If you’re really fast, you can bounce a ball to wake the cat on the left, use an exploding flask to blow up the glass on top of the domino-slabs, and then get a rocket to the sleeping cat on the right.

Hamster: Attack! Level 1:15!

A lot of people ask about how to beat level 1:15 (level 15 in the lab episode). In retrospect we probably should have put that level a bit later, since it’s harder to “get” than the levels around it, though once you know the trick, it’s actually not so hard.
Hint 1:
First, you need to know that explosions can push things on the other side of walls. If you throw the bomb toward the blue ball in the box, it pushes the ball, which pushes the button in the box.

The first few weeks after Hamster was released on Android, we saw great growth, and it looked like we had a hit on our hands. Almost every day we got more users than the previous day, and when we released updated builds, we saw huge spikes in users.
And so it went until the middle of July, when the bottom fell out from under us.
Apparently Google has been tweaking the way the market works, and something happened to the ranking that caused it to drop like a rock.

The Final Stretch

We’re approaching the final stretch on our first original game – close enough that I want to finally announce its official name:
Hamster: Attack! We had a great response to it at GDC. Angel and I showed a pre-alpha version of the game with animations, demo levels and game art.
We were able to demo the game to a broad audience, including some folks from Android at Google. What I liked in particular was how so many people lit up at the animations and gameplay; we tried hard to make the characters fun and whimsical, but you never know how people will react until you put the game in front of them.

After a long search for an artist or art team for our first game, we finally settled on a team based on a recommendation from an old friend. They produced some amazing concept art that really sold me. See below for the first public showing of some of the concept art for our upcoming game.
Meet our cuddly protagonist:
Take your best guess as to what our little rodent will be doing.
